Instructions - Advantages
This HTML5 based tool has the potential to dramatically reduce handling and upload time:
-
Up to 20 photos can be selected at a time via a browse/choose button or drag and drop.
-
Photos can be reduced to desired widths and heights as a batch or individually --
optimized to the actual dimensions the photos are intended to display within item descriptions.
-
Photos can be reduced in file size (bytes) as a batch or individually --
achieved by application of a compression level. (see 'About Compression' below)
-
Photos can be batch renamed from the camera assigned names such as to RedDress001, RedDress002, RedDress003, etc.,
or individually such as to RedDressFront, RedDressBack, RedDressSide, etc.
-
The built in editing capabilities to rotate, crop, mirror, brighten, darken, sharpen, or blur further reduce the
need to pre-process photos using a graphics or photo editor.
-
When using the "Prior to uploading..." option the results of all the above are immediately visible. The previews
displayed in this tool show exactly what that photo will look like after having been uploaded and used in your item presentations. No further alteration occurs during the uploading process, no need to upload to see what it will look like afterwards.
Shortcomings
It is hoped the built in editing and optimizing features will handle ALL the processing of most photos and so avoid the need
for pre-processing with graphics or photo editing software. But, it can't do everything and what it can do probably won't
produce as high a quality result as sophisticated graphic or photo editors.
The most important purpose of this trial, in fact, is to discover if the quality
difference is significant or even noticable.
In this tool the Brighten, Darken, Sharpen, and Blur are particularly weak. Quality loss will occur if you use Darken to
counteract Brighten (or vice versa). Same with Sharpen and Blur. And, if you overdo any one of those there is no recovery
other than to Reset the photo and start over with it. At least the Reset is instantaneous so no time is lost except for
whatever else you may have already done to it with the tools.
Similarly, there is no "undo" for Crop and width/height reductions made to a photo. Thus my recommended sequence for editing:
- Sharpen (if needed)
- Brighten (if needed)
- Crop (if needed)
- Reduce width and height and adjust compression level (reoptimize)
- Rename (if needed)
This tool has no provision for complex operations such as color correction. As always, if there is a need to use
graphics or photo editing software to perform such, that software should be used for ALL the editing and optimizing tasks.
This tool remains useful, however, for batch renaming and for the capability to upload many photos at a time.
About Compression
The higher the compression level assigned the faster the photos will upload now and later appear for visitors when displayed
within item descriptions. Start with the default level of 20 which is usually quite safe to use routinely and experiment from
there with other levels as needed.
Again, the previews shown here are exact so there is no worry your photos will appear differently after having been uploaded and
used in your item presentations. Trust your eyes to determine how much compression you can apply to your photos.
